‘Tis the season and I thought I would take the “off-the-beaten-path” approach and search for a hidden Holiday activity gem that would be enjoyed by the whole family. And yes, I found it. Discovery Park America is a bit out of the way (Nashville is approximately 2 hours southeast), but more than worth a little extra travel time. The Christmas “Let it Glow Light Show” is on display until December 30th and is a current addition to all the other activities and exhibits. You can see thousands of twinkling lights on display, sing along to your favorite Christmas songs, and hang out with Santa.
Discovery Park America is a special place; an outing that is reasonably priced for family enjoyment, and you can select specific or all Special Attractions to enjoy:
The Starship Theater is a 40-minute interactive journey through outer space. You will have the chance to become an engineer, scientist, observer, and even a pilot!
Earthquake Simulator experience is an exciting 10-minute simulation of the 1811-1812 earthquakes that formed nearby Reelfoot Lake. When an earthquake occurs on the video, you will share the physical experience.
The Tower is an observation deck that allows you to see for miles around. There are two glass floor panels inside and the four glass panels outside to stand on – a little scary, but great fun.
The Escape Room is an immersive game in which players are locked in a cabin and must use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within an hour. It is a communal exercise in team building that is shared with strangers or your own 10 person party. …sounds like fun to me.
Discovery Park of America located in Union City, Tennessee, began construction in 2008 and was opened to rave reviews November 2013 offering visitors of all ages a world-class entertainment and educational experience. The park has more than 70,000 sq. feet of interior galleries and interactive and hands-on exhibits focused on nature, science, technology, history and art to engage children and adults alike. Related classes are available. You can explore 50 acres of outdoor space, featuring a Blue Angels plane, Discovery Garden and a 100-year-old chapel. Special events are also available throughout the year such as concerts, traveling exhibits (currently featuring “Bugs” – larger than life creatures over 100 times their actual size – very cool).
You can see almost everything in 5 to 6 hours, but plan to search out an eatery later in the day. The park does not allow bring-in food and the cafe and vending machines are rather pricey. However, I can highly recommend the Penny Hill Shoppe just 7 miles south at 131 East Jackson Street in Union City proper.
Discovery Park America is as others have stated “in the middle of nowhere”, but end-of-trek reward is more than worth a little perseverance on your part. Humor your adolescent side; take the family, have some fun, and most of all – Have a very Merry Christmas! Ref: http://discoveryparkofamerica.com/
